Facebook Messages (new) – Email @facebook.com, Chat and Text

Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site, announced the roll out of an all-in-one messaging service that allows its members to communicate with people outside the social network. The new system will let users own “@facebook.com” addresses. It will let users send and receive instant and text messages in addition to standard email and Facebook notes. Facebook is rolling out the new Messages to everyone gradually. You may request an invitation.

With the New Messages, get all your messages together -- texts, chat, facebook messages and email together in one simple conversation. You can include email by activating your optional Facebook email address. With the new messages system, you can control who can send you messages through your privacy settings. Your full conversation history will be available, irrespective of whether you send email to text message or facebook message. You can see everything you have ever discussed with each friend as a single conversation. The messages from unknown senders and bulk email go into the Other folder. No need to have a subject lines or other formalities for simply sending a message to your friends.

According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, more than 350 million of Facebook’s half-billion users now actively send and receive messages on facebook website. More than 4 billion messages get sent everyday through Facebook. He expects that, many new generation users will shift to an integrated, cross-platform mode of communications over the longer term, such as the new messaging service.

Its new product will automatically route messages from a person’s most frequently-contacted acquaintances into a main inbox, with messages from other contacts pooled in a separate inbox. Unlike traditional emails, all the messages between two people are threaded together into one long-running conversation, without having any significance to subject line.

Users will also be able to view Microsoft Office documents as attachments to their messages directly.

Google TV Software Coming Soon – TV Through Internet

Hey hi friends its so CooL that Google is planning to introduce Android-based television software to access television through internet. It is designed to work on open set-top boxes (STB), TVs and other similar device. Google is expected to share some details with annual developerconference in a conference in San Francisco on May 19 and 20.

The service allows users to access and search across
programmingfrom the internet as well as Dish’s conventional programming. The test is still limited to a very small number of the company’s employees and their families. [via wsj]

The Google TV software might provide a better platform for Google’s web-based advertisements. It is believed that Google might enter into a partnership with Intel, Sony, and Logitech to make this initiative a success. It is also reported that Google has inked a deal with Sony Corporation to launch the Google TV next month in Japan. Intel will provide the chips. But nothing is officially announced yet by Google.

iPhone 3G introduced by Apple

In his keynote address to open Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) on Monday, Steve Jobs officially announced the iPhone 3G. Perhaps the most important revelation was the price, which at $199 for the entry level (8GB) model is half the original’s current $399 pricetag. He indicated that the price was based on research where consumers who have so far passed on the iPhone said cost was the biggest barrier. Not surprisingly he didn’t talk about his previous prediction of 10 million iPhones sold by the end of 2008. Why is that significant? Maybe because at the current (pre-iPhone 3G) prices it appears unlikely to happen.

In fact despite “selling out some number of weeks ago,” Jobs said only 6 million have been sold in the approximately 11 months since the initial launch on June 29 of last year. Jobs showed off the speed difference between the iPhone 3G’s “amazingly zippy” performance on newer 3G networks, compared with the EDGE connection available to owner’s of the original. The same web page that took nearly a minute to load using an EDGE connection took just over 20 seconds across 3G. He also compared it to a Nokia N95 and Treo 750, which reportedly took 33 and 34 seconds respectively to load the same page (using 3G) while delivering it in a less completemobile format. He also pointed out that 3G speed is “actually approaching Wi-Fi.”
Other changes include the use of plastic instead of aluminum for the back (presumably to bring production costs down), as well as the addition of a 2 Megapixel camera and GPS. Near the end of his presentation a map showed 70 countries where the 3G iPhone will officially be available while ‘It’s a Small World’ played in the background. By contrast, the original iPhone is only offered in 6 countries. The iPhone 3G’s initial launch, on July 11, will actually only include 22 countries, with the other 48 planned by year’s end.

Superstars V8 Racing review

Gran Turismo 5 is the racing game that everyone with a PlayStation 3wants to talk about, but Polyphony has been tuning its racing title for ages. Pardon the puns; perhaps it is time to shift gears - or at least cruise in another lane for the time being. Superstars V8 Racing is by no means as detailed, ambitious, or impressive as GT5 looks to be. Still, Codemasters and Milestone have put together a solid racing title that holds up very well as a budget alternative.

It is too bad that Superstars V8 Racing looks and sounds so underdeveloped. Even by PSN standards, the visuals are underwhelming: the track designs are generic, the backdrops are lifeless, and the lack of atmosphere makes each race lonely, even when you pass the camera flashes and cheering bystanders in the grandstands near
the finish line. The sky and clouds in the distance often look muddy, particularly when the weather effects are set for rain. Finally, the muffled engine sound effects are lacking the meanness that I would expect from exotic race cars with massive V8 engines hidden beneath their hoods.

Superstars V8 Racing does not really crash or burn due to its flaws, it just bumps into walls and finishes somewhere in the middle of the pack. For $20, there is a lot of content to play around with, and the gameplay turns out well enough to justify the effort. Racing fans that are sick of GT5’s waiting game might enjoy Superstars as a time-killing alternative. It’s too bad the no-frills presentation and the underlying lack of inspiration prevent it from emerging as a hit racing game, bargain-priced or otherwise.
